the eye(brows) have it

Having good eyebrows can transform the entire look of your face. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a lovely lady who would be even lovelier if her eyebrows weren’t plucked into a sparse thin line.

I speak from experience. In my twenties, my eyebrows were really thin, too. I looked like a Latina gang member from South Central L.A. Over the years, I've stopped tweezing excessively, grown them in and also started getting them threaded (best decision ever!). Now, I’m the proud owner of two full, well-shaped eyebrows.

How does threading work? An aesthetician uses a doubled-up strand of cotton thread to twist around individual hairs, then pulls them out from the roots. The procedure is used mainly on the eyebrows and upper lip. It's been commonplace for centuries among women in India and the Middle East (Persian and Indian women really do have the best brows). I like the thread because it offers much more definition than waxing. It gets every little hair out.

The results are both drastic and subtle. One of those can't-quite-place-it changes that actually make a world of difference. Having my brows shaped always puts an extra pep in my step. (:

Cost is relatively cheap: it starts at about $15. After a professional threading job, you can maintain your new brow line on your own with tweezers.

My go-to place for threading is Esthetics and Hair Designs (101, 15503 – 87 Avenue) which has been around for almost 30 years. Design-wise, it’s a no-frills shop but the ladies are friendly and always do a great job on my brows.

Their number is 780-484-7255. Be sure to ask for Hamida or Mitra.

Happy threading!

  1. Oh yes, I spent my late teens and early twenties with over tweezed brows as well. I even used to tweeze the inner ends, how much we have learned. Thanks for the threading recommendation.

    1. What is it about being in your teens & twenties and overplucking? I think we all did it, Cheryl. Unfortunately, some peeps carry that over into their 30s, 40s and on. Yeesh.

p.s. You're welcome for the reco. The ladies at Eshetics and Hair Designs really do a good job.

  2. I also over tweezed in my 20s and am now allowing a more natural shape to come back in...I just wish it would happen faster!

    1. Hang in there, Courtney! I know it's hard, (there have been so many times I was just itching to pluck like a mad woman) but your patience will be rewarded.

    1. High-5 fellow threading fan! Don't you just love when the esthetician creates a lovely arch? I always look forward to that.

    1. I'm with you, Huoy. The precision of threading is what drew me in. I needed to find an alternative to waxing, which irritated my skin in the worst way.

p.s. Thanks for the compliment! Your brows are lovely, too. (:

  5. Got threaded for the first time last spring - I had to know what all the teenagers were talking about! Until I had it done it was hard to believe that thread could pull hair out, but the results were swift and clean. Getting your eyebrows done after way too long is better than a good dusting under the rug;)

    1. You're so funny, Jenn! And I agree, getting your eyebrows done after months of neglect IS better than a good dusting under the rug. LOL!

p.s. I didn't even know the youngins' were into threading. (:

  6. dude...I sometimes wonder if in another decade our eyebrows will look too thick...because back in the day EVERYONE sported skinny brows! So glad the current look is natural, but enhanced!!!

    1. You're totally right, Shannon! Back in the day, thin was in. if that was the case today, I'd look like an alien lizard.

  7. I've always been intrigued by this! You have such great brows, D, I naturally have sparse eyebrows so I'm all about anything that makes them look fuller!
