eat: it’s phở friday!

pho 3

Phở is one of my most favourite things to eat. I’ve been a fan of the tasty Vietnamese noodle soup ever since my first spoonful.

It's hearty, bursting with flavour, cures whatever ails you and is extremely affordable. I can't think of a better way to combat a cold winter’s day than with a piping hot bowl of phở.

pho 1

A typical bowl of phở consists of rice noodles and slim cuts of beef (steak, fatty flank, lean flank, brisket) swimming in a steaming hot, aromatic beef broth. I usually order a small bowl (large = a cauldron) with thinly sliced rare steak (the beef cooks in the broth) and additional items that some people might classify as "exotic," like beef balls and tripe. I love me some tripe.

For freshness and added zest, phở is garnished with fresh bean sprouts, basil, cilantro and lime wedges.

Sriracha (hot chili) and hoisin sauces are also found at the table, but I prefer to enjoy my phở as is, in all its flavourful glory. My husband, on the other hand, is a lover of spice and invariably adds a few generous squirts of hot chili sauce directly into his bowl to heighten the heat.

My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Want to try this noodle soup bliss for yourself?

Check out one of these slurp-worthy Edmonton restos:
  • Tau Bay (phở-only): 10660 98 Street
  • Ninh Kieu: 10708 98 Street
  • King Noodle: 10613 97 Street

Are you a phở enthusiast? Is there a place you frequent? I’d love to add a few new places to our list.

My next culinary challenge is to try to make phở at home. I’ll let you know how it goes, no matter what happens.

Have a phởbulous weekend, friends! (;

  1. I looove phò too! (but I'm lazy and I pronounce it "fo." ;) I like mine with beef balls and tendon, with two lime wedges and plenty of Thai basil, with sriracha on the side to dip the pieces of meat in. My boyfriend likes his "unadulterated." I could eat it any time, possibly even for my last meal.

    1. I always order the tripe & beef balls but will give tendon a try, too.

  2. Also a lover of phò! I like mine with hoisin and a couple small squirts of sriracha. I don't like the really exotic add-ins but I do enjoy the beef balls and like to dip mine in a combo of hoisin and sriracha on the side. :) Now that we have our little guy we don't get out to eat as much but A Taste of Vietnam in Sherwood Park is pretty decent and close to home!

  3. I love pho, and both my boys (3&5) enjoy it as well so it is a great going-out meal for us that is not too expensive and isn't fast food. By far the best place I have eaten it at in Edmonton is Than Than's, soooo good. Plus, as a pregnancy craving it is very reasonable!

    1. I love that your boys enjoy eating phở, Jodie. I use to take my younger brother to Thanh Thanh years ago - will have to revisit it and order the phở.

      Happy 3rd pregnancy!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.(:

  4. Oh yum! Pho is one of my favorite foods too! We try to take a pho lunch date every Saturday. I always get the tofu version (with four pounds of Sriracha) and the husband is more adventurous with the meats :) xo

  10. Pagolac on 97th street in Chinatown is awesome, then pick up some sticky rice wrapped in leaves from the Hong Kong bakery across the street.
