this book kept me up all night...

I devoured Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn in one day (it kept me up until 3:35 a.m.). It was a bit dark and disturbing, but it was so engrossing I literally could not put it down. The suspenseful thriller tells the story of Nick and Amy Dunne, a pair of New Yorkers who relocate to his Midwest hometown after they both lose their writing jobs. On their 5th wedding anniversary, Amy mysteriously disappears and... cue the clever twists and turns! That morning, I couldn't stop telling Scott about it. Can't remember the last time I gushed that much about a book to him. Highly recommend! It's the perfect beach/plane/summer read. It was also number one on the NYTimes bestsellers list for eight weeks, so I might be the last person in the world to read it (have you?).

Next, I'd like to read The History of Love by Nicole Krauss, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, Wild by Cheryl Strayed and I’ve also heard great things about The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt - described as a "beautiful, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph." Sounds intriguing!

Have you read anything good lately? Any recommendations? I'd love to hear...

P.S. Happily, I just stumbled upon these two websites, The Book Seer and What Should I Read Next?  You type in a book you like, and the site gives you recommendations for similar books.

    1. I just watched the trailer! Thanks for the heads-up, Rix. I love Rosamund Pike! She'll make a great Amy. And Ben Affleck has Nick's nervous smile down pat.

  2. I read it a little while back and just couldn't shake how uncomfortable the ending is! Looking forward to the film but hope it does the book justice!

    1. Uncomfortable is the perfect way to describe the ending, Elyse! I hope the film does the book justice, too. The casting seems pretty good -- I like that Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike are playing Nick and Amy. Guess we'll just have to wait to see.

  3. Gone Girl was AMAZING! I too, couldn't put it down. You'll love the Goldfinch as well...I was mesmerized. I also enjoyed Where'd You Go, Bernadette - delightfully quirky. You on Goodreads? Let's be reading friends! I think we should start a blogger friends reading club :)

    1. I loved "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" - it was such a fun read, Nicole! And I am on Goodreads, just not consistently. I'll come & find you.

P.S. A blogger friends reading club is a fantastic idea! I'm in (:

  4. Gone Girl is on my summer reading list....but now I think I should move it closer to the top. I'm just about to dive into Book of Ages, which I hear is great!

    1. You won't regret moving it closer to the top of your list, Courtney! It's riveting.

Just looked up "Book of Ages" -- I like the sounds of it, plus I know nothing about Jane Franklin. Thanks for mentioning it!

  5. I hardly ever read books anymore, just websites and blogs. Things that I can read and digest in 2-10 minute increments. It's really very sad. I used to be such an avid reader. The Boy did pick up the new David Sedaris for me the last time he was in the UK. You've inspired me to dust it off. :)

    1. With three little kids, I'm sure finding time to read is a luxury, Belle. It means a lot to me that you read my blog (:

P.S. Heard that David Sedaris is funny as heck! Dust off that book, lady!

  6. I read Gone Girl and thought it was a pageturner too. I think you might like Before I go to sleep, which has similar twists and turns.

    1. I agree with Liana, I stayed up late reading Before I Go to Sleep, I had to finish it before I could go to sleep!

Otherwise, I would totally recommend Jim Henson's biography if you are/were a Muppets fan, Where'd You Go Bernadette? and the Rosie Project, if you haven't read those yet.

  8. Loved Gone Girl! It's been a few years since I read it though, so I'm thinking a re-read is in order before the movie comes out this fall. Me Before You was one of my favourite books I read last year and if you haven't already read it, I HIGHLY recommend The Rosie Project!

    1. I'm so late to the Gone Girl party, Brie. Glad I discovered it before the movie comes out this fall.

I'll put "The Rosie Project" on the list, too. Thanks!

  9. It's on my list! For a total change in direction and a great break after a heavy read, I just read "everything is perfect when you're a liar" by Kelly Oxford and had some good laughs.

    1. I read "Everything is Perfect When You're A Liar" too, Heather. Kelly is hilarious! And I love that she grew up in Edmonton. If you liked her book, you'll love Mindy Kaling's biography, "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?" I laughed out loud the entire time I was reading it.
