the ultrasound results are in! we're having...

Yesterday we met our family at Jumbo for dim sum and over shrimp rice rolls and ginger beef dumplings, Scotty opened the envelope from our ultrasound technician (which had been sitting on our fridge taunting us for well over a week) to reveal we're having boys! BOYS. <3

There were joyful tears from our mamas and the biggest smile on my dad's face. He wanted to rush home to call his family in Croatia to tell them the news. Scott was beaming while my brothers were probably thinking, "Oh lordy, our sister's going to have two more guys to boss around for life." Haha. Jokes aside, the excitement was palpable! Side note: dim sum is a fantastic place to share fun news like this. No one noticed our raucous laughter and we could be our wacky selves without getting the evil side eye.

In addition to being excited, I also spent most of yesterday feeling a bit overwhelmed and in shock. I needed time to sit with the news. Had I harboured a secret longing for one of the twins to be a girl? Yes, I had. And I felt incredibly guilty for feeling that way. It would've been nice to have one of each, but I also know that when these two babies are placed in my arms I won't care about anything other than loving them and being the best mama.

For the past five months, we've been referring to these two as the babies and now that I know they're boys, it makes this pregnancy feel even more real. There's no way around it, I'm going to be the mama of two boys early next year. Eeek! In fact, I've already named them because I had an inkling they'd be boys, now I just need Scott's final approval (we have, um, quite differing tastes when it comes to names).

Are you the mama of boys? Or even twin boys? I'd love to hear your thoughts on parenting boys.

P.S. Loved this post from blogger Joanna Goddard on having a boy. It's as if she plucked the thoughts directly from my head. Judging by the near 600 comments, many expecting women have felt the exact same way I have. Here's to being honest about our feelings!

  2. I love that you acknowledge your desire for a girl. Your relationship with your mother seems so close and the bonds of womanhood are deep. I have several friends who have 2 or 3 boys and life is such a wonderful adventure for them! The task of raising boys to be thoughtful and kind is no better hands than you and Scott. Congratulations! This is such beautiful news!

  3. Congratulations!!!! Having two boys myself I know exactly what you mean when you say that you had to sit with the news. I felt bad about secretly wanting a girl. But you're also right about it being fabulous when they're in your arms and you can't love them more. :) xo

  4. Congratulations!!! I was sure Owen was a girl, to the point that I said "she" a few times in the newborn hazy days. But honestly - it doesn't matter. You are so right to say that. You just want healthy babies. And to top it off, I love my little boy. They are the funniest, sweetest little cuddle bugs. You'll be a great mom to those babies, no matter what gender they are. Congratulations!!!

  5. I hear ya D! I was so convinced that Nicholas was a girl and was sad when we found out he wasn't. Cameron wanted a sister so badly he couldn't talk to me about it for a week! That all changes when they arrive and while I would have loved to be dressing up sparkly girls I love my boys so much I can't imagine life without them. Ps someday you might be a grandma to girls and that will be way more fun! That's what I hold onto Xo. Congrats to you both!

  6. Congratulations!!! I can speak firsthand on the awesomeness of being a boy mom, but I totally share in your desire to having wanted a girl. I was pretty sure we were having a girl and I really wanted it to be a girl, and when we found out in the ultrasound that it was a boy, it was definitely a bit of shock, so I totally get that, D. But you're so right, once those babies are in your arms, nothing else will matter, and now I can't even imagine being a girl mom. They say there's nothing like the bond of a mother and her son(s) :) xoxox so excited for you!!!

I was right, so I think I deserve some kind of prize. ;) All the best to you and the family! I can't wait for you to feel THAT feeling. When you hold them. It's the best. Much love. xo.

  10. Gender disappointment is real, and there is no shame in it. They are real emotions, and don't let anybody tell you you shouldn't be feeling that way!
Our first is a boy, and when we were pregnant with our second, I really wanted a girl, but soon decided that brothers would be awesome! We found out he was a boy. :)
When we were pregnant with our third, I really really wanted a girl. I cried in the US room when we were told that we were having a third boy. But I'm glad I had the rest of my pregnancy to get happy about it, and now I am so happy about it. He is now 3 months old. Our oldest is 3.5 so they are really close in age and I am so excited to watch their relationships grow as they get older. Maybe they will have a little sister one day. Maybe another brother. Boys are great, and as much as people say they are easier than girls, they come with their own set of special troubles to walk them through. I am excited to raise my boys to be awesome young men.

  11. I'm a mom of 2 boys and I have to admit I had the same reaction. I felt guilty for feeling this feeling but I think it's only human nature. I have 2 brothers, all the kids in the neighborhood were boys, all my cousins were boys and all my best friends moved away during school leaving me with the boys. Maybe I can really only relate with boys but in my heart I'm a girly girl and wanted to badly to teach a little girl ballet and share all my girliness and my passions with someone, the boys aren't really that interested in dancing and decorating (well maybe my little one is). I still feel like I'm not complete because I don't have a daughter but I wouldn't trade my 2 boys for the world. When they say boys are mommas boys I believe they are. I love that they still love to cuddle at 9 and 6 yrs old. They make me laugh and keep me busy and it's so cute watching them together as brothers. Wishing you all the best with those little guys.

  13. That is so exciting!!! I cried when I found out I was having a boy. Mostly because I had no idea what having a boy would be like. I came around about 2 days later....being a boy mom is so so special. Even now after having my daughter, there is something so amazing about having a little boy (or in your case, two!!). And like Jen said above - brothers!! That will be so fun!

  14. Congratulations! I love following your journey. I have three boys (and no girls). And it really is wonderful. There isn't a short response on how to raise a boy, but I would say that you will be their first love. Boys are inherently active and rambunctious, but they can also be very cuddly and tender. Teach them to be kind and loving, just as you would any child regardless of gender. You are going to be great.

I have also heard from many mothers that have more street cred than I do that boys are hard when they are little but are much more mellow than their female counterparts during adolescence. I'm sure every one is different, but that's just the consensus from my circle of moms.

These boys are lucky to have you and lucky to have each other. Congrats on this happy time.

  16. Congrats!! I know, I "knew" I was having a boy, but I prepared for either and I had a longing for a little girl as well. That said, I don't have to worry about Barbie and all her evil self-image expectations taking over our lives. It makes me feel better, even though I know that boys come with their fair share of issues too, I'm excited to have a boy and guide him to being awesome :)
    Something I'm looking forward to with YOU being a Mama of boys: If anyone can find places to get her hands on fashionable boy's outfits, it is you! ANd I'm sure you'll blog about it and help spread the word. Dressing a boy in awesome clothes that don't break the bank is often close to impossible. {Yes, there are days I come very, very close to cross-dressing my 9-month-old!}

  17. I have two boys that are 20 months apart (they are 3 and almost 2.) Life is so fun with them. Even though they are both boys, they are completely different. I love that! Plus they sure do love their momma! Congrats!

  19. Mom of two boys here. The only thing that disappointed me about having boys was *other* people's disappointment... I think people want friends/family to have girls so they'll have someone to dress up. To me it made no difference at all.

  20. Congratulations on your boys!!! My first was a girl and I still had a tiny bit of gender disappointment when we found out our 2nd was a boy. It didn't last long though and from the moment he was placed in my arms I have never been sad he wasn't a girl. He is such a mama's boy and we have a special bond. Different from what I have with my daughter. Everything changes when they are placed in your arms!
